The Power of Your Thoughts: How Modern Moms Can Take Back Control of Their Lives
Our thoughts shape our reality, and unfortunately, many of us operate within a cycle of limiting beliefs without even realizing it. The good news? You have the power to change that.
Discover how shifting your mindset can help you break free from limiting beliefs and create more joy and ease in your day-to-day life.
How Your Thoughts Shape Your Reality
Our minds work in a circular system: a thought leads to a feeling, which drives behavior, which produces a result. That result, in turn, confirms the original thought. For example, if you think "I'm always running late," that thought will make you feel stressed, leading to rushed behaviors, and ultimately, a situation where you’re late. This reinforces the belief that you’re always running behind.
This circular pattern becomes so ingrained that it eventually becomes a belief that feels like the truth. But here's the thing—just because it's a cycle you’ve repeated doesn't mean it’s set in stone.
The Opportunity to Change
Recognizing these limiting beliefs is the first step toward rewriting them. When you become aware of the cycle, you can step in and interrupt it. Instead of continuing to believe that you’re always late, you can choose to believe that you are right on time. The moment you start shifting that thought, you create the space for a new cycle to begin.
A few weeks ago, I had an experience that brought this to light. I was running late to drop off my son at daycare. We woke up a little later than usual, breakfast took longer than expected, and of course, getting dressed seemed to take the usual amount of time (a.k.a. longer than planned). I was feeling rushed, stressed, and in a hurry to get to school.
But as we pulled into the parking lot, I realized something: two other parents had also arrived at the last minute. And then it hit me: I wasn’t late. I was actually right on time.
That simple realization shifted my perspective. Instead of stressing about being “late,” I started telling myself, “I’m right on time.” This new thought calmed me down and helped me feel more at ease, especially in the mornings when things don’t always go as planned. Now, I approach those hectic moments with a sense of calm, and guess what? Everything falls into place much more smoothly.
How to Rewrite Your Limiting Beliefs
Just like in my story, your thoughts play a big role in how you experience your day-to-day life. So, how can you rewrite limiting beliefs and create a new, empowering thought cycle for yourself?
I’ve put together three simple steps to help you rewrite a limiting belief. Rewriting beliefs doesn’t happen overnight, but with practice, you’ll start feeling more aligned with your new thoughts, which will lead to more peaceful, intentional actions.
Identify the Limiting Belief: Start by recognizing the belief that’s holding you back. Are you constantly thinking you’re late, overwhelmed, or incapable? Awareness is the first step to change.
Challenge the Belief: Ask yourself: Is this belief really true? What evidence do you have that contradicts it? This will help you see where it’s limiting you.
Replace with a New, Empowering Belief: Choose a belief that serves you better. In my case, replacing “I’m always running late” with “I’m right on time” helped me change my perspective and feel more at ease.
The Key is Patience
Changing your mindset is a process, so be patient with yourself. Each day, remind yourself of your new belief. The more you practice it, the more natural it will feel. You’ll begin to see how small shifts in thinking can create big changes in how you feel and how you show up in your life.
